South End Historical Society

The South End Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich architectural, social and cultural history of Boston’s South End. Founded in 1966 by residents who recognized the neighborhood’s significant architectural character, the organization played an important role in the South End’s designation on the National Register of Historic Places as the largest Victorian brick rowhouse district in the United States.

Through preservation advocacy, research, education, lectures and neighborhood walking tours, the South End Historical Society works to protect the historic character that makes the community distinctive. Its collections preserve photographs, maps, books, archival materials and other records documenting the South End across generations, helping residents and visitors better understand the people, places and stories that have shaped the neighborhood.
